In spite of stereotypes that conjure up images of gypsies and crystal balls, the modern psychic is not what we might expect.
Ghost-hunting clairvoyants, sobbing celebrities, and reality shows featuring clairvoyants do not fit this category. It is common for skeptics to dismiss psychic abilities as pseudoscience, while firm believers may go as far as replacing their therapists with frequent (even daily) psychic readings.
In order to gain a better understanding of what working psychics do, I spoke with Lotus Oldman, who was named “Best Female Medium” in 2022 by the Paranormal World Society.
In light of the fact that Oldman defines herself as a “modern shaman,” I asked her for a definition of that term. Shamanism is often associated with healers who interact with spirits, but it encompasses so much more.
By modern, I mean for our present day, how does that translate?
Oldman says.
It is necessary for us to have a means of navigation between the nonphysical and physical realms. The concept of a shaman is one that deals with a bridge to the non-physical world and all that entails… So as a shaman, I could take advantage of a sense of connectivity to the non-physical world, whether it’s through inter-dimensional spaces or past lives or just feeling spirits and connecting with those who have passed.”
The refreshing aspect of Oldman’s approach is her belief that everyone has psychic abilities, but may not know how to harness them.
I believe everyone has a connection to the nonphysical realm,
…she said.
Developing that connection is like building a muscle.
Oldman admits she has an unusual background but does not necessarily feel “unique” because of her experiences during her formative years.
When I was a child, I used to get premonitions all the time. I would see my dad mow the lawn or my mom wash dishes, and then it would happen five seconds later. It was like a constant state of déjà vu or awareness.
She opened up to her parents rather than ignore or accept these occurrences as “normal.”
She recalled a time when she knew who was in a car accident with my brother, and at the time, she shared her findings with her parents. “They were like, ‘OK, I think something is really going on.’ That was a big shift for me as a teenager.”
She’s had her fair share of skeptics throughout her career, as she’s built a worldwide client list.
She did not have the desire, from an ego standpoint, to prove to people that this was real. If it was not relevant to them, it was fine. If someone was skeptic, I did not have a desire to prove them wrong.
Comparing biblical proportions, she said,
When Jesus turned the Red Sea red, people were like, ‘Yeah, but maybe that was a chemical reaction.’
Despite their skepticism, some people are scared of receiving bad news from the beyond. Oldman presents that possibility as an opportunity for them to change their paths. “I believe in free will,” she said. “What I see is determined by the energy of the moment, and we can change the energy from here forward.”
Whether it’s illness or relationships, Oldman views these factors as moldable. “Even if it’s disease or a checkout time, we have some ways to heal the body,” she said. “There are ways to bring reconciliation if someone doesn’t want to create what we see.”
Love is one of life’s biggest uncertainties, and Oldman takes relationship readings very seriously. The most common request she receives is to read relationships. “I’ll help them if they’re alone, since the most common things we deal with are spiritual experiences and past relational traumas.
From spiritual perspectives, what we can do to clear ourselves of that, how to let go of certain issues in order to avoid repeating the same patterns.”

When psychics channel the other side, what do they see?
Oldman says it depends on how the spirit wants to be perceived. The way they portray themselves sometimes is very physical and they want to appear in a certain way. Oftentimes they appear in military uniforms or really young and handsome – not always what they really look like.
Possibly they died of old age but wanted to show themselves that way because they wanted to communicate with the person with whom I am practicing mediumship.
It is always relevant to the person with whom I am interacting. Although their parents died when they were in their 30s, they can still look like their little, childlike selves, running up to their parents and jumping in their laps.”
New York-born Oldman now calls Austin home and loves the energy here. “There’s a sense of honesty and openness here, and even the energy within the land is very open and sincere,” she said.
Additionally, she travels for readings and workshops on topics ranging from basic terminology to complex practices.
What about “clairaudience”?
It’s the ability to hear nonphysical voices. Sometimes clairaudients are unaware that what they hear isn’t ordinary, as Oldman explains. In her example, she said, “People who are clairaudient and who have a grandmother who passed away but was very influential in their life still have conversations with her in their heads all the time.”.
It’s a psychic sense of clairaudience, yet they probably wouldn’t call themselves psychic. In response, they would simply say that they still talk to their grandmother. Because it’s already a part of our lives, there’s an ease to it.”
It is most important to Oldman that she uses her own gift to help others.
As a result, sometimes I feel like I’m just watching it happen and I’m just in awe, as if it was just happening to me. Even though I’m channeling the information, there’s a part of me that realizes in a human way what an incredible stretch it is to believe it.

I’d recommend to visit a well-reviewed psychic in your area, maybe recommended by a dear friend, or use a trusted live psychic reading platform. These are quite popular right now but avoid those “machine-like” readings…
